A theory of aesthetic rationality should allow for the construction of a theory of argumentation that would bind together understanding, interpretation and judgement, the moments of criticism that are usually simultaneous and which are crucial to approaching artworks. The explanation of such aesthetical rationality, which is at once descriptive and prescriptive, entails the notion that dichotomies should not be created between facts and values, thus shedding the illusion that art and aesthetics are spheres of pure autonomy. On the contrary, they are related to society and present themselves as models for possible practical-sensible and practical-moral actions. As there are no objective and definitive proofs to aesthetical judgement we should resort to a theory of argumentation that is specifically aesthetical in order to avoid an aestheticization of society, politics or morality.

This talk aims at developing a medium-unspecific notion of painting that is nevertheless able to capture its residual distinctness under conditions that led to its diffuse boundaries. Why does painting still figure as a ‘success-medium’ (Niklas Luhmann) in the so-called post-medium condition? If painting has expanded and tends to be everywhere, as I will argue, it seems to make little sense to delimit its realm. But by opting for a semiotic notion of painting that defines it as a production of signs that is experienced as highly personalized, I will try to do justice to both — its specificity and its unspecificity. A semiotic approach allows us to see how its codes are operating in other art forms (unspecificity) and how its indexicality is a special one (specificity).
Instead of regarding indexicality once more as an anti-subjective device, I will propose that painting’s indexicality consists in suggesting a physical connection to the one who (supposedly) has left her marks. In other words: It is due to its indexicality that painting is able to evoke the sense of a subject-like force. As a product, it suggests the presence of the (absent) person of its maker. The fact that painting — may be more than other artforms — operates as an ‘index of agency’ (Alfred Gell) will be finally related to the value that is still attributed to it. Marx’s value theory is useful in this respect because he already noted that there is no value without ‘living labor’. With Marx in mind I will propose that the specific value form of painting has something to do with the sense of liveliness that it is able to produce. Since painting was traditionally expected to produce liveliness in all kind of ways, it seems to be the ideal candidate for value production especially when considering how it circulates in our new economy that seeks liveliness and regards life as a resource.

Early modern architecture had a deep interest in the social relevance of the discipline. ‘Bauen für das Existenzminimum’ [Building for the living wage] was the title of the CIAM Conference in 1929 in Frankfurt. And the first architecture exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art — ‘Modern Architecture: International Exhibition’ — in 1932 dedicated one room to the question of Slum-Upgrading, next to the luxury houses of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. But the impact of the related theories did not last very long; it was only in the 1960s when some architects like Aldo van Eyck, Ralph Earskine and Giancarlo de Carlo started a new approach exploring again how design could be rooted more directly to the real needs and expectations of society. After the economic crisis of 2008 once more there is a group of architects emerging to reclaim the social dimension of architecture. They work in underserved communities all over the world and their designs connect a thorough knowledge of local conditions with a general understanding of global problems.~

The hypercirculation of contemporary images forces us to move beyond basic aesthetic categories or notions of value, and into the realm of the ontology and ethics of new affects and effects. Given the demands images make of us today, in the form of mediation, witnessing and iconoclasm, what are the effects of the images we are allowed to see, those we share, and those we do not see but know, in fact, to exist? What does it mean to touch an image, not merely to look at it? Rather than value, should we be speaking about the political effects and aesthetic affects of the image, what they demand from us?

With the ongoing tension between formalistic and post-formalistic types of art criticism in mind, the paper will compare significant examples of classical and contemporary positions. Since the latter often refer to pop, cultural and/or aesthetic theory, the traditional tension finds its continuation in current debates on the legitimization of the judgment: should it be grounded in the aesthetic object or the reflexive subject, in authoritative taste or in shared knowledge, in objective criteria or in subjective affects? Those conflicts go along with changing theoretical paradigms in order to claim not only distinct expertise and/or a counter-canon, but also socio-political relevance. Considering art criticism at the same time as an integral practice within multiple networks (the art/exhibition market, public/private institutions, old/new media, academia/self-organized projects) the question will be whether and in how far the loss of distance pushes its self-abolition in order to overcome its marginal status within ruling value systems.

In order to lay out a few conditions for the exercise (understood as affirmation) of art(s) criticism, we shall discuss and refute some conceptualizations while convoking others to form the core of what is to be defended here, which in synthesis starts from an approach to the conception of art as expressed in a statement by Monet: ‘Paint not what we see, for we see nothing, but paint what we do not see’. The conference is structured as a clarification of the following issues: the facts of the ‘art world’, knowledge and event-truths; interlocution and decision: affects, rationality, discontinuity, responsibility; the destiny of criticism as errant performativity or non-opinion forming ‘acceptability’.
